It pays to get the best!

Yesterday, my husband, Chris – the best Internet searcher around! – uncovered a real gem in an 1899 yearbook from the University of Colorado. It’s an ad for Mrs. B.B. Chase’s photography studio in Denver, Colorado. What’s particularly special about this ad is that it includes a photo of the interior of Mrs. Chase’s studio:

BTW, you can click here for a link back to my podcast episode and notes about Belle Bybee Chase – a.k.a Mrs. B. B. Chase. I talk about her long successful career as a photographer, and include a few interesting personal notes about her life, too. She was a fascinating early woman photographer.

In a serendipitous coincidence, I happened to run across this image yesterday in the Montana historical archives.

Woman reclining on tiger skin rug on divan in photo studio. Photographs from the Montana Historical Society

Now, this photo is labelled on the archive site as being a photo of Mrs. B. B. Chase, rather than as a photo taken by Mrs. B. B Chase in her studio. I think that’s just a misunderstanding of how Mrs. B. B. Chase’s studio name usually appears on the photographs taken by her.

In any case, note how the divan the woman is reclining on in the photo above could well be the same divan seen in the photo of Mrs. Chase’s studio in that yearbook ad. Fun!
